Eye Care Equipment
We use a variety of advanced ophthalmic equipment to detect and treat eye conditions in their early stages. The effects of systemic conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure can be detected and monitored with our imaging systems.
Modern lasers are extremely versatile and their beams so precise that they can be focused on a spot as small as one millionth of a meter; this technology makes diagnosing and treating many eye disorders easy, and efficient with little to no pain and without the need for a series of subsequent visits. For your convenience, our diagnostic, laser and scanning facilities are located in-house.
This device measures both the shape of the front of the eye and detects any imperfections and measures all 26 optical aberrations in the eye that lead to blurred vision especially in low light conditions. Conventional eye exams and measuring equipment only measure 2 of the 26 aberrations of the eye. The data obtained is then used to provide the most customized and accurate prescription, or the information can be transmitted to Carl Zeiss in Germany where more optically precise lenses can be produced for the patient.
The Macular Pigment Optical Density, or MPOD Screener, is a device that measures the density of macular pigment in the retina ? the important layer of the eye responsible for sight. This screening can help us to make early treatment decisions that may help to prevent or slow potential vision loss caused by age related macular degeneration.
Ocular Coherence Tomography uses light to provide an extremely high-resolution, three-dimensional scan and neurological assessment of all of the structures that comprise the eye from front to back. This device is now routinely used in every hospital in Toronto.
Heidelberg Retinal Tomography provides a cross-sectional scan of the optic nerve, giving the doctor additional information beyond an ordinary examination of the back of the eye; HRT has long been the global standard for assessing the optic nerves affected by glaucoma. Small changes that may lead to the disease can be detected up to three years earlier than with a regular eye exam.
We scan every eye at this high level, whether affected by pre-existing glaucoma or not.
VISUAL FIELD DEVICE
This device can detect the presence of small or large blind spots in patient's vision.
Because they won't necessarily affect the ability to drive, read, watch TV, etc., these spots can go unnoticed; the existence of these defects may indicate the early stages of a more serious condition.
The Visual Field Device used at Downtown Eye Associates is the most recognized among all eye specialists for this purpose.
